Nas' delivery on It Was Written is disjointed, but his concerns are straightforward. On ''Street Dreams'' he details how coke has ravaged his neighborhood, and on ''Black Girl Lost'' he sympathizes with the struggle of African-American women without sounding self-consciously PC. Humor disguises the grim subject matter while Nas' eye for minutiae lends credibility and urgency to his hip-hop short stories. A-
