On ''Street Dreams'' he details how coke has ravaged his neighborhood, and on ''Black Girl Lost'' he sympathizes with the struggle of African-American women without sounding self-consciously PC. Humor disguises the grim subject matter while Nas' eye for minutiae lends credibility and urgency to his hip-hop short stories. A-
