Land of the Living (1996)

Most dance-music debut albums are one-hit blunders. Not Kristine W's. Clubgoers have already embraced Land of the Living's infectious anthems ''Feel What You Want'' and ''One More Try.'' Now they can work up a sweat to the ebullient title track and ''Let Me In.'' When she isn't packing a soulful wallop, the singer quietly seduces, conjuring up a gospel-tinged slow groove on ''Sweet Mercy Me.'' She gets bonus points for cowriting her material. Watch your back, Madonna. B+
