Field of Dreams

Writer-director Phil Alden Robinson's New Age baseball fable always seemed bogus — trying way too hard to be a boomer It's a Wonderful Life — but this deluxe letterboxed edition makes a better case for it than anticipated. Along with a truly gorgeous transfer, the illuminating commentary by Robinson and cinematographer John Lindly, as well as a disc's worth of extras (interviews with the actors, even the complete shooting script), reveals that Field of Dreams was a labor of love for all concerned, and their sincerity and enthusiasm are surprisingly contagious. True, along the way we learn much more about raising corn than is really necessary, but such goodies as Robinson's accounts of his on-set anxiety attacks and Timothy Busfield's killer impression of costar Burt Lancaster easily compensate. B+
