Jack & Sarah

Details Movie Rated: PG; Genre: Comedy; With: Richard E. Grant and Samantha Mathis

Multiply Three Men and a Baby by Truly, Madly, Deeply and you get Jack & Sarah. But the result isn't as prefab as it might sound. This romantic dramedy, in which a young British widower (Richard E. Grant) comes to terms with his grief and his newborn daughter, actually pays earnest attention, albeit briefly, to such issues as alcoholism, family dysfunction, guilt, and jealousy as it wends its elliptical way toward the slightly unbelievable happy ending. The intimacy of the TV screen is just right for the film's unblinking look at bereavement, a subject rarely handled with sensitivity in American films. B+
