Even with her staggering talent, Patsy Cline might never have left the hills of Virginia had it not been for talent scout Arthur Godfrey, whose TV show kick-started her career. Recently discovered in the attic of Cline's former Nashville home, the 1957-58 recordings on The Birth of a Star showcase her versatility and spunk, especially against Godfrey's generic pop orchestra. B+
