Genre: Jazz

Though increasingly renowned for his subtle virtuosity in the mainstream jazz idiom, Hank Jones has taken surprising yet logical detours of late — on last year's brilliant ode to spirituals and now in a jazz/West African pact. His crisp, supple piano phrases mesh nicely with the organic Mandingo grooves set forth by Malian Cheick-Tidiane Seck. Sarala is a happy, natural marriage, tracing a root system of jazz. B+
