Though increasingly renowned for his subtle virtuosity in the mainstream jazz idiom, Hank Jones has taken surprising yet logical detours of late on last year's brilliant ode to spirituals and now in a jazz/West African pact. His crisp, supple piano phrases mesh nicely with the organic Mandingo grooves set forth by Malian Cheick-Tidiane Seck. Sarala is a happy, natural marriage, tracing a root system of jazz. B+
