Thanks for bringing to light the heroin situation in Hollywood
(#339, Aug. 9), the latest battleground in our nation's drug
war. Though Dana Kennedy handled the topic with much grace and
dignity, I still find it almost impossible to work up the
respect for those who can't even respect themselves.

Why should we worry about these spoiled, overpaid actors and
musicians who abuse their minds and bodies? It's time for these
stars to grow up and take some responsibility for their actions.

To run a Sound Bite of a Jay Leno joke about Robert Downey Jr.
(and a tasteless ''Robert Downey Jr. Olympics'' cartoon in a
previous issue) cheapened the impact of an otherwise serious
story. I don't think you need to sink to such a low level it's
not funny, it's sad.

In your story of heroin use in the entertainment industry, you
state that I was one of several users who worked with ''addiction
intervention specialist'' Bob Timmins in order to get clean.
Although I know Bob, I first met him several years after I got
sober without his help.

In your recent story, Sting is called an environmentalist. But
he fails to realize that sharing a chauffeured car and private
jet with his comanager hardly fits any definition of carpooling.
This is unacceptable. The environmental movement can do without
the likes of this so-called green artist.

Hollywood is passing up a great opportunity in abandoning a
movie version of The Dreyfus Affair. It's got all the right
ingredients: love, baseball, and an underdog struggle. The
public usually doesn't care whether a movie is about gay or
straight characters; they care whether it's good or bad.

Alicia Silverstone is too young to play Samantha in the movie
version of Bewitched. Michelle Pfeiffer should play her, Jim
Carrey should play Darrin, and Shirley MacLaine should play
Endora.

Bob's Bud
A recent item referred to my ''thinly veiled contempt'' for NBC
tennis commentator Bud Collins. If, in deadpanning my responses
to him, I left anyone with that impression, it could scarcely be
less accurate. I have enormous regard for Bud. He is an
intelligent, capable, accomplished, and most importantly,
warmhearted guy. I consider him a friend.
