The roster of stars on this homage to seminal L.A. punks The Germs reads like a who's who of punk and post-punk America — everyone from Black Flag bassist Kira to Courtney Love. Like all tribute albums, Germs (Tribute) A Small Circle of Friends thus suffers from serious overkill (21 songs from a band that put out one album?) But at least the assembled alternarati are talented and varied enough to impose individuality upon these repetitive hardcore romps. An energetic nod to punk spirit that's less dated than its sound. B
