Deana Carter writes truly first-rate songs (she's cute, too), and producer Chris Farren, an Angeleno popsmith, not a member of the Nashville mafia, has crafted a stylish, hard-punching country record. Only problem is...Carter's voice, which is hardly memorable. Still, Did I Shave My Legs for This? is a far better-than-average debut, though Carter's lasting mark may be as a writer. B
