This straight-to-video also-ran showcase opens more promisingly than it has a right to, with a surreal sequence in which Cyndi Lauper, as a nightclub mermaid, mimes a lounge number while submerged in a giant aquarium behind a hotel bar. Unfortunately, once the plot kicks in, Off and Running quickly goes from opaque to improbable to downright unengaging. Given a mysterious key by an ex-jockey paramour just before he's murdered, Cyd (Lauper, who actually can act) sets out to find whatever it is the key unlocks. Pursued by a kung-fu-fighting Tom Waits wannabe, she teams up with an over-the-hill motel golf pro (David Keith), inadvertently kidnaps a Miami prostitute's trash-talking son, and gets mixed up in some all-too-predictable B-movie high jinks.
