Those of us who have been waiting for the exquisitely lovely Halle Berry to top-line a movie would be better off forgetting this one ever happened. Pathetically overwrought and underwritten, The Rich Man's Wife makes a feint in the direction of Hitchcock's Strangers on a Train: The emotionally abused trophy wife (Berry) of an L.A. TV executive (Christopher McDonald) confides a muttered wish that he'd be better off dead to a stranger (Peter Greene) she meets in a bar. But since Greene plays said stranger as a fire-breathing nutjob, only very credulous viewers will be surprised when he sets off on a murderous rampage. There are several dumb plot twists, but nothing so silly as asking us to believe that Berry would be married to McDonald (Geena Davis' lout husband in Thelma & Louise) in the first place. Berry proved she could act in Losing Isaiah; here, she just looks gorgeous. At least that gives us something to contemplate while waiting for the credits to roll. D-
