Oliver & Company

Fancifully based on Dickens' Oliver Twist, this new-to-video Disney musical follows the adventures of a stray kitty as he hooks up with a motley crew of mutts, then meets a lonely little rich girl who gets kidnapped along with him. During the heroes' daring rescue, a couple of Dobermans get zapped on subway tracks, but except for that and some shrill vocal shtick by Bette Midler as a pampered poodle and Cheech Marin as a Chihuahua, the rest of this escapade is colorfully benign. Oliver & Company is no Lady and the Tramp — but if you pair it with The Aristocats, you'll have the purrfect at-home double feature. B-
