The Sacramento quintet Cake uses trumpet, grunge guitar, and eerie background vocals over a standard hip-hop beat to keep things moving. There's tension in the eclectic mix, and humor, too, once you figure out it's all for a shaggy-dog story about a race-car driver who circles the track long after he's lost. ''The Distance'' is inventive but slight. B
