Cafe au Lait

The French taste in humor — inflating delicate ideas into elephantine proportions — is not always shared by the rest of the planet. Following suit, this romantic comedy by hotshot director Mathieu Kassovitz (Hate) remains as resistible on the small screen as it was on the big one. The plot has a pregnant, free-spirited young woman (Julie Mauduech) refusing to tell either of her lovers — a scrappy white boy (Kassovitz) and the painfully well-behaved black diplomat's son (Hubert Kounde) — who the father is. The battling boys eventually become friends. And isn't that just too sweet? Kassovitz's United Nations male fantasy virtually bucks with testosterone, but, alas, Cafe au Lait is no substitute for having interesting people populate the screen. C
