Nicholas Evans' The Horse Whisperer is a predictable tale of a girl, her horse, her mother, and the lean laconic rancher who brings them all together. There's some fine psychological shading and considerable authenticity of detail horses, landscapes, kids. Then again, there were good moments in Waterworld, too.
