Nicholas Evans' The Horse Whisperer is a predictable tale of a girl, her horse, her mother, and the lean laconic rancher who brings them all together. There's some fine psychological shading and considerable authenticity of detail — horses, landscapes, kids. Then again, there were good moments in Waterworld, too.
