Frances Lear, 73, of breast cancer, Sept. 30 in New York City. Lear was widely acknowledged as the model for Maude, which was created by her then husband, Norman Lear. When the two divorced in 1984, Lear's $112 million settlement was among the biggest at that time and provided her with enough cash to launch Lear's magazine, which ceased publication in 1994.
