Superman II (1996)

EW's GRADE
A

Details Rated: PG; Genres: Action/Adventure, Fantasy; With: Gene Hackman, Margot Kidder and Christopher Reeve; Distributor: Warner Bros.

Director Richard Lester's Superman II — follow-up to the movie in which ''you'll believe a man can fly'' — is one of those sequels that actually surpasses the original. It boasts a more consistent tone, better special effects (such as villains throwing buses around like paper planes), and even an affecting love story, rendered more poignant by the real-life tragedies of Reeve and Kidder (who look quite vital in this beautifully remastered letterboxed edition). The surround sound is also a revelation; when Superman rescues a child from Niagara Falls, an off-camera voice in the crowd can be heard declaring ''Of course he's Jewish!'' A
