MULTIPLICITY Michael Keaton, Andie MacDowell (1996, Columbia Tri- Star, PG-13, priced for rental) The first incredible thing about this movie is that people got paid to write the script. The second is that its director is the same Harold Ramis who gave us the marvelous Groundhog Day. This formula comedy's premise, suitable for an after-school special, is that an overworked contractor (Keaton) clones himself to relieve the pressure, falls into dull-witted slapstick, then Learns an Important Lesson and wins back his beautiful, formerly unappreciated wife (MacDowell). The techno trickery used to put four Keatons on screen simultaneously (which is frequently lost in the video cropping) is nearly as worn out as Keaton's character. Although Multiplicity was hardly a hit, it did sell some tickets in theaters. You would be wise not to multiply the mistake. D+
