When it comes to playing a coldhearted, self-absorbed bitch, even Heather Locklear and Linda Fiorentino could learn a few tricks from Joan Collins. Best known as Dynasty's ruthless vixen, Alexis Carrington Colby, Collins gives her signature diva role a new spin as a frosty agent in Kenneth Branagh's new-to-video comedy A Midwinter's Tale. We asked Britain's queen of cattiness, a strikingly youthful 63, about Branagh, prospects for a Dynasty reunion, and TV's current crop of tough broads.
How was working with Kenneth Branagh?
I loved it. Being an actor, he absolutely adores actors. But
he's very demanding; he likes to do everything in one shot.
What should happen on the next Dynasty reunion movie?
It would be really interesting if Alexis had lost all her money
and she was coming back to Denver totally broke. But knowing
Alexis, she'd never be broke for long.
Who is the reigning TV bitch of the 1990s?
I haven't watched American television shows for some time, but
from what I've read it's Heather Locklear on Melrose Place. She
used to study me on the set, and she did say in interviews that
she learned a lot from me as Alexis.
You won the Random House suit, which claimed that your last
novel, Hell Hath No Fury, was unpublishable. What would you say
to them now?
When you're a multibillion-dollar corporation, it is very easy
to try to slap one individual — me — down. But I'm not
intimidated — something I learned from Alexis.
Which title of the movies you've made best describes your life:
Decadence, Sins, The Bitch, The Stud, Revenge?
I'm not decadent. I'm not sinful. I'm not out for revenge. I'm
not a stud. And I can occasionally be a bitch.
