A serious historical film drained of serious history. Director-writer Neil Jordan tells the tale of Collins, a key figure in what became the Irish Republican Army in the early part of this century, and gets a classic performance out of Liam Neeson. As the reluctant rebel-turned-statesman, Neeson combines the earnest intensity he radiated in Schindler's List with the two-fisted swagger he brought to Rob Roy. Julia Roberts provides the love interest; she's charming, but the romantic triangle between her, Neeson, and Aidan Quinn (as Collins' best friend) is hokey and contrived.
