Now absorbed with homework, horses, and her 15-year-old boyfriend, Jeff, Sara Kushnick is calling the shots. Recently she began arrangements for Joan Licursi to be her legal guardian. On spring break she plans to go to L.A. for a visit with Leno, the guy she says ''was like my mom's other kid.''

''She'll be fine,'' says Leno. ''She's a tough kid.'' Sara agrees. ''When I saw Jay, I told him my mom was strong and powerful and angry and that I'm strong and powerful too, but not angry,'' she says. ''I told him I left my anger behind when my mom died. I told him we should just let it go and start over, and I hope we will.''
