There are echoes of Boyz N the Hood and Thelma & Louise in this girl-pack story about four housing-project girlfriends who decide to rob banks, but that doesn't account for the very particular dark and loose qualities of this fresh piece of work. The story doesn't always hang together, but the foursome -- Jada Pinkett, Vivica Fox, Kimberly Elise, and the astonishing Queen Latifah -- are tight. And as reality closes in on their fantasy world, the film swings off on a powerful, tragic trajectory.
