In the past year, only the Beatles anthologies have kept catalog-heavy Capitol Records on Billboard's top 10 pop albums chart. But label prexy Gary Gersh's efforts to give the dinosaur label a legit alternative roster have borne fruit. Capitol currently claims 3 spots in CMJ's top 10, which ranks college radio airplay. The label's deal with indie Matador pays off in a first-place showing for the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, and a hookup with the Beastie Boys' Grand Royal imprint results in a runner-up slot for white-chick hip-hoppers Luscious Jackson. Today, the Real World crowd; tomorrow, the world?
