Pairing Luscious Jackson with mainstream megaproducer Daniel Lanois (U2, Peter Gabriel) seems counterintuitive. But the strange union generally works: Though polished (not a nice indie word), their second full-length Fever in Fever Out locks into a smoother, more strolling groove than before, with lyrics that have moved from the occasionally strident to (at worst) the occasionally self-involved. The result may be more funk than punk, but everyone needs a break from the mosh pit. B
