The 16 songs on the benefit album Safe & Sound: A Benefit in Response to the Brookline Clinic Violence — in versions appearing here for the first time — cover a wide swath of Boston's alterna-rock scene. Problem is, for every gem from Aimee Mann or Belly, there's a clunker from Fuzzy or Juliana Hatfield. Still, Safe and Sound's heart is in the right place even when its ears aren't. B
