Music Review: 'Shared Vision II: the Songs of the Rolling Stones' (1996)

Rifling its vaults, Mercury found that over the last 25 years a slew of its artists recorded Rolling Stones songs. Voilà — Shared Vision II: The Songs of the Rolling Stones, an instant tribute (and a benefit album for the Lighthouse as well)! The best of these — Johnny Cash's hoedown on ''No Expectations'' and Rod Stewart's slide-guitar driven ''Street Fighting Man'' — dare to mess with the Mick and Keith songbook. But poseurs from Cinderella to the Stones' intimate Marianne Faithfull pussyfoot around, as if approaching this iconic material gives a rocker cold feet and sticky fingers. B-
