Music Review: 'That Thing You Do!' (1996)

EW's GRADE
B

Details Lead Performance: Various Artists; Genre: Soundtracks

Don't pigeonhole the multifaceted Tom Hanks. Apparently not content to merely act and direct, he also co-wrote or produced nearly half the That Thing You Do! soundtrack's songs; from Freddy Fredrickson's lounge-lizard anthem ''Mr. Downtown'' to the vibrato-drenched surf guitar of the Saturn 5, he captures the infectiously zany spectrum of '60s pop. But outside the film's period trappings, the Wonders' title cut sounds more like the Knack than a Merseybeat chestnut. B
