THE JUDGE Steve Martini (Jove, $6.99, first published in 1995) A lens sliver from tyrannical Judge Armando Acosta's glasses turns up embedded in the bludgeoned body of a vice-squad decoy, and DA Paul Madriani reluctantly agrees to defend the man he hates. The long trial that follows is as vivid as it gets; too bad the author can't maintain that same hypnotic control when court is in recess. B
