The high priestess of soul-jazz in her early prime, circa 1959-64. With a voice that sounded like a muscle trying to break through its skin, the former Eunice Waymon was (and is) an elemental, uncategorizable musical force. Her Colpix work ranged all over the stylistic map, from Ellington to Tin Pan Alley to gospel. And she only hits her stride here: If and when RCA puts out a late-'60s box, the world will be a better place.
