Lead Performance: Jimmy Webb
B
JIMMY WEBB Ten Easy Pieces (Guardian) Cursed with an ability to write breathtakingly perfect pop ballads that he himself can't sing, Webb tries one more time on these mostly unplugged rerecordings of his standards. Webb's husky voice and piano are more lugubrious than beauties like ''Galveston'' and ''Worst That Could Happen'' need. But there's no denying the quality of the songs, making this a serviceable introduction for beginners until some smart label finally compiles the all-star Webb tribute album we (and he) deserve. B
