Music Review: 'Ten Easy Pieces' (1996)

EW's GRADE
B

Details Lead Performance: Jimmy Webb; Genre: Pop

Cursed with an ability to write breathtakingly perfect pop ballads that he himself can't sing, Jimmy Webb tries one more time on Ten Easy Pieces, a set of mostly unplugged rerecordings of his standards. Webb's husky voice and piano are more lugubrious than beauties like ''Galveston'' and ''Worst That Could Happen'' need. But there's no denying the quality of the songs, making this a serviceable introduction for beginners until some smart label finally compiles the all-star Webb tribute album we (and he) deserve. B
