RIOT Gary Daniels, Sugar Ray Leonard (1996, PM, R, priced for rental) Set in riot-strewn 1999 Los Angeles, this simpleminded action film is PM's expected low-budget, straight-to-tape answer to Paramount's Escape From L.A. After an unaccommodating criminal kidnaps an ambassador's daughter, her Special Forces ex-fiance (Daniels) gets tapped to deliver the ransom to the center of the war zone. This leads to convoluted IRA involvement and rote plot machinations, though the film takes the time to rip off The Warriors with a homicidal gang of street-hockey players. Leonard shows up to provide star wattage, although perversely, he doesn't get to use his boxing skills to punch up the movie's long, annoying fight scenes. C-
