Could Mulder and Scully pass for real FBI agents? Are UFOs really out there? We asked former FBI supervisory special agent Gregg O. McCrary for the real truth or his version of it, anyway.
IS THERE A REAL X-FILES DIVISION AT THE FBI?
As close as we come
is the unit I was in, the ''Profiling Unit.'' It deals with the
behavioral sciences, and bizarre and unusual crimes sex crimes,
serial killers, etc. There isn't any real need for an X-Files because there aren't any aliens running around but there's
enough bizarre human behavior to keep us busy.
HOW REALISTIC ARE MULDER AND SCULLY?
They aren't realistic in
their day-to-day activities. Mulder and Scully seem to be pretty
much on their own like lone rangers. But suddenly jetting off
to cover a lead, etc., is not how it works. The FBI is a
bureaucracy, so there are a lot of regulations and
authorizations even for routine travel. That's also why we have
field offices. As for their personalities, they seem like agents
you could run into; as individuals there's some credibility.
HOW REALISTIC IS ASSISTANT DIRECTOR SKINNER?
We have directors
with similar personalities, but assistant directors don't work
directly with agents. Layers of bureaucracy lie between them.
ARE THERE BLACK (OR ROGUE) GROUPS WITHIN THE GOVERNMENT GROUPS
THAT ANSWER TO NO ONE?
Not that I'm aware of. The only thing
I've been sworn to secrecy about is foreign intelligence. Within
the FBI, there's certainly subterfuge and sensitive, undercover
work in foreign counterintelligence.
DOES THE FBI ACKNOWLEDGE UFOS?
We certainly acknowledge the
reports, and there are a lot. But whether they are indeed flying
saucers is the critical issue. For the FBI to get involved with
UFOs, there would have to be ''statutory jurisdiction,'' and I
don't know why [they] would have it, unless the UFOs were
committing a federal crime.
DO FBI AGENTS DRESS AS WELL AS MULDER AND SCULLY?
I don't think we have the wardrobe budget they do.
DO YOU THINK SCULLY IS HOT?
She's certainly attractive and
intelligent.
