THE FLOWER OF MY SECRET Marisa Paredes, Rossy De Palma (1996, Columbia TriStar, R, subtitled, priced for rental) Who else but director Pedro Almodovar could effortlessly connect organ transplants with tight boots, flamenco dancing, Bogart in Casablanca, and a screaming contest? The Spanish director returns to form with this comedy-drama about a romance writer (Paredes) whose marriage is crumbling. Typically, Almodovar bends melodramatic conventions -- think Joan Crawford movies, but with irony and humor. Besides, Crawford never had a costar like Almodovar regular De Palma, who is hilarious as the writer's argumentative sister. Even when this bad-boy auteur shows signs of mellowing, his touch remains as tart as ever. B+
