Surprisingly, the antic horror flick The Frighteners from director Peter Jackson (Heavenly Creatures) failed to scare up much business last summer. His everything-goes approach mixes a con-artist ghostbuster (Michael J. Fox), his otherworldly pals (including John Astin, as a randy judge who keeps losing his jawbone), a serial killer (Jake Busey), and other oddball characters in a fast-paced F/X blender that's consistently witty and often lewd and rude. The climax, which blurs living and dead, past and present, not to mention heaven and hell, is especially thrilling. B+
