Details Lead Performance: Throwing Muses

Depending on your predilection for surreal, stream-of-consciousness couplets, Kristin Hersh's lyrics can seem either startlingly profound or frustratingly ridiculous on University. This is the sixth album by the Newport, R.I., band (which once included Belly's Tanya Donelly), and if listening to what sounds like a therapy session with a poetic schizophrenic doesn't float your boat, there's always the music: a propulsive brand of edgy guitar-rock that's ultimately more haunting than any confession Hersh utters. B+
