Midnight Edition

Freely adapted from a book about a real murder case, Midnight Edition ostensibly charts the mutual obsessions of a small-town reporter (Will Patton) and a death-row killer ( Michael DeLuise). During a series of interviews, they get inside each other's heads, but we never do. The movie is so immersed in its stylized mood that it omits essential narrative information — the plot and characters don't so much develop as lunge forward. Along the way, they produce some stunningly stark moments. The rest is pretentious murk. C
