Freely adapted from a book about a real murder case, Midnight Edition ostensibly charts the mutual obsessions of a small-town reporter (Will Patton) and a death-row killer ( Michael DeLuise). During a series of interviews, they get inside each other's heads, but we never do. The movie is so immersed in its stylized mood that it omits essential narrative information the plot and characters don't so much develop as lunge forward. Along the way, they produce some stunningly stark moments. The rest is pretentious murk. C
