However, the long-term commitment demanded by such artists does have its rewards. "The big benefit they have is that you're establishing an act instead of a song," says Azzoli. "And when you're establishing an act, you're building a roster and a catalog."

In any case, few in the follow-the-herd record industry are waiting to see if roots rock will take hold. "Even at Atlantic," says Azzoli, "A&R guys are (already) coming to me with Hootie clones."
