Loaded down with a cargo of stars, producer Darryl Zanuck's splashy, earnest production of Somerset Maugham's novel was the kind of ''literary'' adaptation that Hollywood used to do best. Power plays a Midwesterner searching the world for the meaning of life; Tierney is the girl he leaves behind. But it's Clifton Webb who's most enjoyable, as an old homosexual dispensing advice and acerbic comments with poisonous precision.
