Jason's Lyric (1995)

EW's GRADE
C

Details Movie Rated: R; Genre: Drama; With: Allen Payne and Jada Pinkett Smith; Distributor: Gramercy Pictures

When this romantic drama opened last year, director Doug McHenry (House Party 2) charged the MPAA with sexism and racism for its objection to the original poster. Instead, he should have made a stink over Bobby Smith Jr.'s script, which has all the complexity of a coloring book. In Jason's Lyric, two brothers take different directions on the mean streets of Texas. Joshua (Bokeem Woodbine) heads for terminal gangsterdom, while Jason (Allen Payne) and his girlfriend Lyric (Jada Pinkett) do the right thing, ad nauseam. In fact, repetition is the key theme: The seminal event in their lives is revisited so many times a tree stump would get the message. C
