Oscar Gets Caught in the Net

The Oscars move on-line

Film fans eager to evaluate this year's Oscar nominations can access a variety of online sites. ABC has an Academy Awards site on America Online that offers photos and notes about the major categories as well as chat groups. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has a similar Internet site (http://guide.oscars.org).

*Just since the Feb. 15 arrest of Über-hacker Kevin D. Mitnick, more than 30 Net break-ins have been reported to the Computer Emergency Response Team, a federally financed security group.

*Concerned that new technology may offer new means of financial exploitation, the Writers Guild of America is expected to approve a new contract stipulating that authors receive a percentage of the sale of television or film rights for any interactive product. Similar issues face the Screen Actors Guild; studios are reportedly rushing films into production in an effort to finish them before the current SAG contract expires on June 30.

*In a unique move, the Spring Street Brewing Co. in New York has placed its initial public stock offering on a Net home page (http://www.interport. net/witbeer).
