SHALLOW GRAVE (R) Danny Boyle's glittering, deadpan, nihilistic little Scottish thriller about how three yuppie roommates (Ewan McGregor, Kerry Fox, and Christopher Eccleston) become three cold-blooded, scheming lizards following the death of a fourth tenant, a thug involved in drugs who dies of an overdose, leaving behind a suitcase stuffed with cash. At first it's shocking and weirdly thrilling to meet such unlovely people living in such a lovely flat and expending such twisted energy in the Hitchcockian service of getting rid of a stiff. But the film offers no context for the meaningless violence that takes place, and eventually the shallow in the title takes on a less satisfying meaning. B- ( 265, March 10) -LS
