The Muffs Blonder and Blonder (Reprise) This L.A. trio's sassy 1993 debut consisted of the updated punk-pop that was months away from becoming the stuff of which gold records are now made. Their two-year hiatus now seems like time well invested in more considered, sophisticated songwriting. That, combined with Kim Shattuck's manic, guttural screaming and balladic warbling, ought to convince any newcomers that these are no Johnny-come-latelies. A- -MF
