Details Lead Performance: Various Artists; Genre: R&B

With this 68-track set, Hi Records claims its rightful place in the holy trinity of Memphis-based labels. Though lesser known than Sun (which had Elvis) and Stax (which had Otis), Hi released sublime R&B throughout the '60s and '70s, reaching its zenith with Al Green. The 15 Green tunes here showcase not only his miraculous voice but the supple Hi Rhythm section, which also lent its sound to soul titans Ann Peebles, Otis Clay, and O.V. Wright. Not a low in the Hi collection.
