Former Box Tops and Big Star leader Chilton is an alternative god (the Replacements even sang about him). On this solo outing, he proves why, taking a crack at everything from Brian Wilson's ''New Girl in School'' to Chris Kenner's ''Sick and Tired.'' With Chilton's gritty voice lending authority to the bar-band atmosphere, even the dippy ''What's Your Sign Girl'' aches until it breaks.
