Murders in the Rue Morgue Bela Lugosi, Sidney Fox; ISLAND OF LOST SOULS Charles Laughton, Richard Arlen (1932/1933, MCA/Universal, unrated, $59.98) Each of the celebrated horror flicks in this double-feature set is a masterpiece of art direction. If Rue Morgue has the post-Caligari German Expressionist look down cold (and it does), then Souls (making its disc debut in an okay print) is a 19th-century fairy-tale engraving come to nightmarish life. Beyond that, the two are also linked thematically: Each has a mad doctor protagonist (Lugosi versus Laughton in the overacting contest of the century) and a disturbing preoccupation with scenes of torture. Bonus celeb sighting: Rue Morgue features '50s game show doyenne Arlene Francis in a cameo as a streetwalker. B -Steve Simels
