COSMOLOGY OF KYOTO: TALES OF THE HEIAN MILLENNIUM

COSMOLOGY OF KYOTO: TALES OF THE HEIAN MILLENNIUM (Azuma Lander International, CD-ROM for Macintosh, $98) While it's immediately appealing to those who understand the title, this beautifully illustrated historical reference game will also interest those with little knowledge of Japanese history from the 9th through 12th centuries. Accompanied by a reference section providing descriptions of the period's buildings, citizens, and culture, the game blends truth with mythology in an artfully rendered, sometimes gruesome journey through an ancient world where demons, karma, and reincarnation rule. However, since the game has no discernible goal, it soon bogs down in a frustrating cycle of death, torture, and rebirth. B -ER
