Losing Isaiah (1995)

EW's GRADE
B-

Details Rated: R; Genre: Drama; With: Halle Berry and Jessica Lange

Losing Isaiah (R) The conflicting claims of biological and adoptive motherhood are given a calculated racial twist in this well-meaning but unbelievably utopian drama by screenwriter Naomi Foner and her husband, director Stephen Gyllenhaal. What, they posit, if the birth mother is a black, unmarried, reformed crackhead as pretty as Halle Berry? And what if the adoptive mother is a white, upper-middle-class, married social worker as beautifully maternal as Jessica Lange? The script is ultraearnest, Berry is ultrarefined, but Lange is who you want to watch: She projects a compelling, womanly gravity and gives Losing Isaiah its dramatic focus. B- ( 267, March 24) -LS
