Details Lead Performance: Red House Painters

Red House Painters Ocean Beach (4AD) Lead Painter Mark Kozelek remains a king of American gothic gloom and hypnotic melancholia, but this time, he lets in more sunlight, Simon and Garfunkel influence, and acoustic guitar woodsiness. A beautiful structural mess, the album includes an instrumental opening tune, the elegantly sad ''Cabezon,'' and extended songs that sprawl all over the darkened living room of your brain.
