Concise text describes their often tumultuous lives, but the real treasure lies with the photographs and vividly informative audio-video clips that unfortunately don't appear with every entry. The sight of blues empress Bessie Smith singing with all of her soul expresses more about her than words could. While more contemporary figures should have been included (where's Madonna?), this disc beautifully heralds women in a multimedia realm where their presence has gone virtually unnoticed. A-
