BEYOND OASIS

BEYOND OASIS (Sega, for Genesis, $79.99) Sega's answer to Nintendo's enduringly popular Zelda series is a weird hybrid indeed -- part role-playing game, part kick-and-punch bruiser, and part Aladdin rip-off (Ali, your on-screen alter ego, is a dead ringer for the Disney hero, and he wears a colorful turban). But Oasis doesn't quite measure up to its inspiration: Although the characters are bigger, faster, and meaner than anyone you'll find in the pokey Zelda, and the action moves along at an impressive clip, Beyond Oasis lacks the subtlety and depth of a truly satisfying role-playing experience.
